World Albatross Day is celebrated annually on June 19th. This year will mark its 20th year. Established by, The Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) has raised awareness about the threats its listed albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters face and to promote their conservation.
Each year, World Albatross Day features a different theme to highlight a specific threat faced by albatrosses. This year’s theme is “Marine Protected Areas – Safeguarding our Oceans.”
Past themes have included:
- 2020: Eradicating Island Pests
- 2021: Ensuring Albatross-friendly Fisheries
- 2022: Climate Change
- 2023: Plastic Pollution
