Who We Are?

Carlos Zavalaga

Carlos Zavalaga is a marine biologist who holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He currently leads the Marine Ecosystem Research Unit – Peruvian Seabird Group at the Universidad Científica del Sur in Lima, Peru. His research endeavors primarily focus on biologging, conservation, and the management of seabirds in the Humboldt Current. He collaborates with seabird scientists globally, engaging in projects related to the interactions between Peruvian seabirds and anchovy fisheries, the role of house mice as predators of Peruvian diving-petrels, the impact of oil spills on seabird toxicology, activities of migrant New Zealand albatrosses in Peruvian waters, the use of drones for seabird monitoring, among others. Carlos enjoys conducting field trips to the Guano Islands of Peru with his students and is eager to collaborate with international academic institutions on future projects.

Seabirds globally have served crucial social, economic, and ecological roles; however, they remain unfairly unrecognized or underappreciated in numerous countries. Their significant contributions to enhancing our comprehension of ocean and coastal dynamics and the human-induced threats they confront have motivated me to channel my efforts towards their protection.”
